Fete week is fast approaching and to get us "fete fit" and in shape Jonny Bryan has arranged a Holbrook Hill Race and Fun Run - on the 13th July 2018. Both races start at the Holbrook Sports and Social Club and finish at the Spotted Cow.
Recent events in Windsor saw lots of bunting out in the streets, can Holbrook go one better! Please adorn your walls/fences with bunting in the week leading up to the fete. The Knit and Stitch members have been busy making bunting that will be on sale in the Spotted Calf Cafe in the coming weeks.
As previously announced, the Holbrook branch of the Womens Institute ("WI") is celebrating its centenary this year and to help celebrate this milestone the theme for this year's fete will be "Best of British". The gates will open at 12.00 noon with the official opening at 1.00pm by Chrissie Booth, Chair of the WI Derbyshire Federation. As Chrissie was the recipient of a "golden ticket" for the Royal Wedding I am sure she will be delighted to answer any questions about the day.
In keeping with this theme, we are delighted to announce that The Newhall Brass Band will be playing during the afternoon. There will be the usual activities and games including:
Bouncy Castle, Joust and Bungee Run
Ferret Racing - Holbrook Style
Penalty shoot-out - run by Bargate Kestrels
WI and St Michaels Church Cake Stall
Refreshments provided by the Guides
The ever popular Bar Tent and BBQ Tent - in addition to the regular food this year we are offering a steak burger
Various Craft Stalls, Charity Stalls and Community Run Stalls
Mrs Superwhippy Ice Cream Van
Why not cool off in Chris Ottowell's dunking chamber in aid of UK Diabetes
Fancy dress competition - theme "Best of British" - prizes for the best dressed man, woman, boy and girl
Scarecrow competition - theme "Best of British" - three prizes to be won. Please have all scarecrows out by 6.00pm on Tuesday 10 July 2018. Judging will take place on Tuesday/Wednesday evenings. To show off your hard and creative work, please bring the scarecrows along to the fete, if possible.
"Holbrook Bake Off" - villagers can enter by baking one of the following: (i) a Victoria sponge (jam filling only) or (ii) lemon drizzle cake. As this is a bit of fun we will not be specifying a recipe. The only requirement is that the size of the Victoria sponge is 7 or 8 inches diameter and the lemon drizzle cake is to be the size of a 1 lb or 2 lb loaf tin. Any children that wish to take part should please make two, regular size, decorated cupcakes (any flavour). Please bring your cake/cupcakes on a paper plate to the" Bake Off" stall, all entries to be handed by 2.00pm. Please write your contact details on the underside of the plate and indicate if you wish to donate the cake/ cupcakes to be sold at the WI/St Michaels Church cake stall, after judging. The members of the WI will judge the entries taking into consideration both appearance and taste.
NEW Early evening - will be having an open mic session from about 5pm to 7.00pm - at the time of press "Simply Mel" (who has sung at the Spotted Cow) is doing a session, amongst others. Later in the evening - back by popular demand is the Sensational Hot Rocks Band who will play a sefection of music.
